Athens, GA (Dec 3, 2007) - I have worked off an on with Tom Hammond over the years, most recently during the 2006-2007 College Basketball Season. This is is profile as published by NBC Sports.

tom-hammondTom Hammond’s association with NBC Sports goes back to the network’s regional college basketball broadcasts in the late 1970s. Hammond’s big break came in 1984, when he was hired on what was intended to be a one-time-only basis as a reporter for NBC's telecast of the inaugural Breeders' Cup Championship. That telecast won an Eclipse Award, racing's highest honor, and Hammond has been involved with every Breeders’ Cup telecast and NBC Sports ever since. Hammond also hosts the Visa Triple Crown Challenge for NBC.

In his fourth Olympics with NBC, the versatile Hammond once again handled track and field play-by-play duties during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Hammond won acclaim for his track and field work during the 1996 Olympics, particularly for his call of Michael Johnson’s historic double-gold medal performance in the 200- and 400-meter races. NBC’s broadcast of the 1999 Track and Field World Championships, for which Hammond did play-by-play, won an Emmy Award.

What started as a one-time network opportunity has blossomed into a wide-ranging network career for Hammond. In addition to working on track and field and thoroughbred horse racing broadcasts, he serves as a play-by-play announcer for NBC's coverage of the “NBA on NBC” and Notre Dame football. Hammond has called gymnastics, figure skating, college football - his conversational style is at home anywhere on the sports landscape.

In April 2000, Hammond was honored as a distinguished alumnus of the University of Kentucky, where he earned bachelors and masters degrees in equine genetics. Hammond is a native and resident of Lexington, Ky., where he lives with his wife, Sheilagh. They are the parents of daughter Ashley and sons David and Christopher. He is on the board of directors for the Thurday’s Child organization, which facilitates special needs adoptions.
