Athens, GA (Sept 4, 2008) - The soon to be launched Major League Baseball (MLB) Network has taken a first step in forming an identity for people to respond to and recognize the new brand: they unveiled their new logo.

In a September 2, 2008 press release, MLB said:

The MLB Network has unveiled its logo, representing the first element of the new network's identity. The logo incorporates MLB Network in block letters above Major League Baseball's iconic silhouetted batter logo within a home plate-shaped border. "

As the home to all things baseball, it's appropriate to incorporate home plate along with the classic silhouetted batter into our logo," said Tony Petitti, President and Chief Executive Officer of the MLB Network (pictured left). "This identity is consistent with the timeless Major League Baseball logos and will come to represent the comprehensive baseball programming that the network will offer."

The new logo will appear on MLB Network advertising and promotional materials, on the set of MLB Network studio programs, and in conjunction with everything related to the new network.

So here we have the first clues as to what is happening with this new network. They do not yet have a web presence, but they do own the mlbnetwork.com domain (as well as .org, .net, .biz and .tv). It simply redirects to the MLB web site for now, but is an indicator that they may have plans for a stand-alone website.

Time to wait and see what is revealed next as the planned January 2009 launch date approaches.
